Boiler Maintenace Checklist

• Check Boiler pressure with an accurate gauge.

• Check expansion tank “tap test” or sight glass for signs of water logging.

• Check PRV (pop off) position and piping, outlet clear, valve vertical, pointed down.

• Take gas pressure reading and adjust to name plate and/or follow high altitude
recommendations.

• Check for soot in the heat exchanger, even trace amounts can indicate a big problem.

• Check draft of atmospheric burner, BIC test on the draft hood.

• Take temperature rise of boiler/system.

• Boiler type: Copper, cast, steel, etc.

• Pump size, piping size; size consistent?

• Note system static (pump and boiler off) pressure.

• System contains Glycol? At what level?

• If flow is in question take pressure readings on either side of pump as close to the pump as possible.

• Ideally all system pumps should pump away from the expansion tank.

• Auto fill present? Open or closed? If opening a closed fill valve, note system pressure and turn
system off for 10 minutes to be sure the valve does not “stick open”.

• Commercial boilers need to have a manual reset high limit control per code.

• Does the system have a backflow prevention device?
